GAIL’S RESTO DISCOVERIES – SUNSET

It’s never too late to write about a ‘not so new’ place and this time, our pick is one we love in our local neighbourhood.

Sunset, a ‘bar à manger’, opened November 2015 after huge renovations by the owner, David Lyon. David is originally from California but lives in the area with his wife and son. He fell in love with the north end of Montmartre and had a vision to open a comfortable, vibrant place catering to locals. David worked with the architectural firm NeM to completely redesign what was previously an old pub. The openness of the space makes you feel welcomed and the work of Matthieu Cossé, painter and illustrator, gives it an industrial but warm feel due to his choice of colours.

We often go to Sunset, for lunch, dinner or cocktails, depending on the time of day. The menu changes regularly with lunch specials and small, tapas-style plates to share at night. All portions are reasonably sized and beautifully presented with simple creativity by chef Jordan Bischoff.

On our last lunchtime visit we sampled their goat cheese mousse with tomatoes, oregano, basil and smoked ricotta, the melon, coppa, pesto, tomato and pine nut plate and the tuna tataki with avocat cream, passion fruit/pepper vinaigrette, sweet potato and coriander. We also tried their chicken Caesar salad with a twist, the burrata with ratatouille, basil and grilled almonds and a salad with thinly sliced fennel, homemade ricotta, smoked/dried ricotta and pickled red onions.

In the evening, Sunset is always busy with locals coming in for cocktails and more. It’s usually a traditional stop for us to have that ‘last drink’ – sometimes that is wine from their carefully selected list and sometimes it’s a creative cocktail by barman Amine Stambouli. There is a large space in the back that can be privatised for groups of up to 35. The restaurant also has additional outdoor seating at communal tables. Our preferred spots are perched at the bar for cocktails or on the terrace for lunch.

Lunch is served Monday-Friday from 12:00-14:30 and until 15:30 on Saturday with a two course lunch for €14.50 or three courses for €16.50. They serve a brunch on Sundays starting at 12:00. Dinner is served from 19:30-22:30 with dishes from €7-€16.
