With the arrival of Autumn, Paris has once again assumed its role as the artistic hub of Europe offering a host of noteworthy museum and gallery exhibitions, special events and even new gallery openings.

Here are some of the season’s highlights:

The Grand Palais will display over 100 works on both silk and paper of Japanese artist Hokusai from October 1-January 2015

The Musee d/ Orsay will host a very unusual exhibit entitled Sade, Attacking The Sun beginning on October 14 and running through January. The focus is how the Marquis de Sade transformed literature and art tracing desire as a principle of escess through the artwork of Goya, Gericauit, Ingres, Rodin and Picasso.

The Festival d’Automne. Paris celebrates contemporary art by embracing all forms of artistic expression including art exhitions , theatre and dance performances and concerts in some of Paris’ most iconic landmarks. The website provides details of more than 50 ongoing events scheduled.

A major retrospective of the sculpture of French artist Niki de Saint Phalle will be shown at the Grand Palais from September 17-February 15, 2015.

DON’T MISS: Masks, Masquerades & Mascarons is the subject of an unusual exhibition at the Musee du Louvre until September 22nd. Over 100 artworks explore the paradoxical function of the mask which both disguises and draws attention to its wearer.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Blanche Nuit (White Night) is October 4th
The entire city will bustle from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM on October 4th for one of the most highly anticipated art extravaganzas of the year. This event encompasses all art forms and includes art related activities, live performances and concerts at various venues as well as in the streets around Paris. Museums offer special tours (some are free) and galleries open their doors until dawn. Stay up all night with the other Parisians and enjoy the festivities.
